The 2024 year in review is the look back and the topics, trends, and people that have made up the content of the SMC Journal podcast. What a year it’s been. The year has gone by so fast, it was almost a blur. Now that we’re at the end of December, let’s take a look at what’s happened in IT and what we’ve talked about on the show.

Year In Review For Software Engineering

Based on the search results and the context of a 2024 year in review, here are some of the most important developments in software engineering:

AI and Machine Learning Integration

The integration of AI and machine learning into software development processes has been a major trend in 2024. Key developments include:

  • Advanced AI-powered coding tools like GitHub’s Copilot have become more sophisticated, offering real-time code suggestions and function generation.
  • TensorFlow has emerged as a leading framework for AI development, especially when combined with Theano for building and testing neural networks.
  • AI-driven analytics tools like Tableau have enabled businesses to gain insights from their data more efficiently.

Cloud and Edge Computing

2024 saw significant advancements in cloud and edge computing.

  • Cloud-native technologies have become more user-friendly, offering enhanced performance and cost savings.
  • Edge computing has gained prominence, especially in industries requiring real-time data processing with low-latency requirements.
  • The adoption of 5G networks has improved connection capabilities, enabling more complex mobile applications.

That’s why we had David Linthicum on the first show of 2024:

Cybersecurity Focus

Security has become a critical aspect of software development:

  • There’s been a shift from reactive to proactive security measures.
  • AI is increasingly being used for threat detection and prevention.

Low/No-Code Development

The rise of low/no-code platforms has democratized software development:

  • These platforms have made it easier for non-technical users to create applications.
  • This trend has implications for traditional software development roles and processes.

Agentic AI and TuringBots

TuringBots, AI-powered development assistants, have made a significant impact:

  • They’ve improved software development lifecycle productivity by 15% to 20%.
  • Coders have seen productivity gains of 20-50% on average, with some experiencing up to 200% increases when working with unfamiliar languages or libraries.

That is why I recently tried out the new “Computer Use” feature from Anthropic’s Claude AI:

Developer Experience and Portals

There’s been an increased focus on improving developer experience:

  • Spotify’s Backstage has become the predominant framework for self-service developer portals.
  • This trend aims to consolidate developer resources and improve efficiency.

These developments highlight a year of significant change in software engineering, with AI and automation playing central roles in shaping the industry’s future.

Conclusion

While 2024 went fast and we saw a lot of change, I feel like we are going to see even more next year in 2025. What do you think 2025 will bring?

A special thanks to everyone who consumes my content online. Whether that is the videos on YouTube, social media, the mailing list, or drinks the 503 Blend coffee – THANK YOU for all of your support this year.

I wish everyone a great holiday season and I look forward to seeing you all again in 2025! Happy New Year.
